The Screwtape Letters: With Screwtape Proposes a Toast

The Screwtape Letters: With Screwtape Proposes a Toastby C. S. LewisHarperCollins

In this humorous and perceptive exchange between two devils, C. S. Lewis delves into moral questions about good vs. evil, temptation, repentance, and grace. Through this wonderful tale, the reader emerges with a better understanding of what it means to live a faithful life.

Who among us has never wondered if there might not really be a tempter sitting on our shoulders or dogging our steps? C.S. Lewis dispels all doubts. In The Screwtape Letters, one of his bestselling works, we are made privy to the instructional correspondence between a senior demon, Screwtape, and his wannabe diabolical nephew Wormwood. As mentor, Screwtape coaches Wormwood in the finer points, tempting his "patient" away from God.

Each letter is a masterpiece of reverse theology, giving the reader an inside look at the thinking and means of temptation. Tempters, according to Lewis, have two motives: the first is fear of punishment, the second a hunger to consume or dominate other beings. On the other hand, the goal of the Creator is to woo us unto himself or to transform us through his love from "tools into servants and servants into sons." It is the dichotomy between being consumed and subsumed completely into another's identity or being liberated to be utterly ourselves that Lewis explores with his razor-sharp insight and wit.

The most brilliant feature of The Screwtape Letters may be likening hell to a bureaucracy in which "everyone is perpetually concerned about his own dignity and advancement, where everyone has a grievance, and where everyone lives the deadly serious passions of envy, self-importance, and resentment." We all understand bureaucracies, be it the Department of Motor Vehicles, the IRS, or one of our own making. So we each understand the temptations that slowly lure us into hell. If you've never read Lewis, The Screwtape Letters is a great place to start. And if you know Lewis, but haven't read this, you've missed one of his core writings. --Patricia Klein

Oppose and Propose: Lessons from Movement for a New Society (Anarchist Interventions)

Oppose and Propose: Lessons from Movement for a New Society (Anarchist Interventions)by Andrew CornellAK Press

Where do the tactics, strategies, and lifestyles of today's activists come from? Many ways of doing radical politics pioneered by Movement for a New Society in the 1970s and 1980s have become central to anti-authoritarian social movements: consensus decision making, spokescouncils, communal living, unlearning oppressive behavior, and co-operatively owned businesses. Andrew Cornell's important contribution to US political history uses this story to raise crucial questions for activists today. Oppose and Propose is an engaging and accessible study, every page offers new insights.

Andrew Cornell's work appears in Letters from Young Activists and The University Against Itself. He helps produce the quarterly anti-capitalist magazine Left Turn.

What Should the Left Propose?

What Should the Left Propose?by Roberto Mangabeira UngerVerso

What Should the Left Propose? is a manifesto that engages a vital question of our time: where do we go from here?

What Should the Left Propose? is a manifesto that engages a vital issue of our time: the program for which Leftists should stand, now that the ideological proposals of the past two hundred years are exhausted.

Confronting the major debates in the world today — about national alternatives and alternative globalizations — Unger shows that there is a set of national and global alternatives that we can begin to develop with the materials at hand: opportunities available to us only if we learn to recognize them. These alternatives would, over time, vastly enhance our practical capabilities. They would also give greater reality to the central teaching of democracy: faith in the constructive genius of ordinary men and women.

For Unger, a programmatic argument is not a blueprint; it marks a direction and explores next steps. He explores the form this direction could take in the European social democracies, in the United States, in the developing countries, and in the contest over the reform of globalization. He shows how the Left in power can do more than use compensatory redistribution to sugarcoat economic inequality, and how it can make good on its ideals without reaffirming a discredited commitment to governmental control of the economy.

Dancing Cats, Silent Canaries: A Traditional Medical Doctor takes a closer look at unsolved epidemics of Autism & SIDS and proposes a solution

Dancing Cats, Silent Canaries: A Traditional Medical Doctor takes a closer look at unsolved epidemics of Autism & SIDS and proposes a solutionby David Denton Davis MDOutskirts Press, Inc.

Two of the biggest mistakes of the 20th Century may be the use of polyvinyl chloride, also known as PVC, in baby mattresses and the aggressive use of unproven baby and infant vaccines. Both PVC and vaccines contain dangerous heavy metal toxins. The epidemics of Sudden Infant Death and the spectrum of autistic disorders have grown in parallel with the growing use of PVC and vaccines. Dr. Davis' emergency medicine career has witnessed many events that support his accusations. This book provides parents with little known but important facts that suggest both PVC and vaccines can be deadly or disabling alone or in combination with each other. Most importantly, Dr. Davis offers parents, who wish to become advocates, steps that can be taken to protect their babies from the oversights and greed of the petrochemical, pharmaceutical and medical industries before it is too late.

What The Darkness Proposes: Poems (Johns Hopkins: Poetry and Fiction)

What The Darkness Proposes: Poems (Johns Hopkins: Poetry and Fiction)by Professor Charles MartinThe Johns Hopkins University Press

"Martin is a moralist in the best sense of the word, a poet concerned with defining human values in a changing society, making his points with wit as well as compassion. He is not afraid of using ideas in verse and brings his intelligence as well as imagination to bear on each poem."--Dana Gioia

In this new collection by poet and translator Charles Martin, a darkly comic vision engages an unpredictable variety of subjects in poems of astute technical assurance. In this book, the reader will find a displaced snapping turtle, advertisements that look back at us, the link between classical Athens and a television quiz show, and many other wonders, including the unsettling possibility of a poetry reading

"Whose audience consists of... you. There's only one of you, I see. One would have hoped there might be two. One ought to be outnumbered by One's audience, don't you agree? The two of us, then? You and I? Will no one else be dropping in? I thought as much. Then let's begin... "

Praise for Passages from Friday: "Martin's Friday... is a wholly successful characterization. His plain speech and plebeian misspellings, his notional capitals and italics compromise... a style that realizes and projects the speaker's character, a tour de force in which style embodies vision."--Daniel Hoffman, in Words to Create a World

Praise forThe Poems of Catullus: "[A] translation that successfully recreates in English the wit, the lyric exaltation, the playful banter, the despair, the scurrilous invective, and the dramatic flair of the original, all of it moving easily in artfully contrived and skillfully controlled English equivalents of Catullus' many and varied meters."--Bernard Knox, New York Review of Books

"Martin is an American poet; he puts the poetry, the immediacy of the street, back into English Catullus. The effect is electric."--Newsweek

Like some kid who listens to Depeche Mode while practicing the ancient art of divining water, Charles Martin spins out beautifully constructed formal poems with a decidedly contemporary spin. "At Home With Psyche and Eros," for instance, depicts Eros bringing home the tabloids so that Psyche can read about Bigfoot's pregnant daughter. "Victoria's Secret" similarly juxtaposes the contemporary lingerie catalogue with current perceptions of Victorian sensuality. I'll leave you with this sample, from "Stanzas After Endgame": "Meaning emerges out of random act / And lasts as long as there are those intent / On finding it and keeping it intact / In fables of impermanence."
